The people of the earthwouldn't disperse and star ted to build the Tower of Babel, working on itfor 53 years. The people dispersed after the Lo rd confounded theirlanguage, which stopped the work on the tower (Genesis 11:1-9).  In his day the earth divided.  The meaning of his name, that is,'division' as rendered in Heb rew, is confirmed by the Akkadian nounpulukku, which means a dividing up of territory by mean s of borders andboundaries.  The Akkadian verb meaning to divide at the borders ispalaka.  Li kewise, the Assyrian palgu refers to the dividing up of landby canals and irrigation systems .  It is in this sense that the Hebrewword peleg is used. The man named Peleg, however, was so named after the division andscattering of the nations a t Babel.  In fact, one of the ancient names ofBabylon (Babel) is nowadays translated as 'th e place of canals' (palgu);whereas a better translation would obviously by 'the place of divi sion'.
