General Notes

Hawys, surnamed Gadarn, or the Hardy, from encountering and surviving the siege made on the Castle by her Uncle Griffith. She was aged 18 at her brother's death, thus born 1291. She married Sir John Cherleton, son of Sir Robert de Cherleton of Charlton, in the parish of Wrockwardine, County Salop. The uncles of Hawys or Hawise preferred a claim to her possessions, contending that she as a female could not inherit her father's lands. They besieged Powys Castle, occupied at the time by her and her husband, and the King sent Roger de Mortimer, then Justice of Wales, to march hither for their relief and protection. To render Hawys and Sir John more secure in their title they had a royal charter in the 7th of Edward II, confirmatory of all their lands and castles in North Wales, South Wales and Powys.
