Maud de was born about 1155 in Berkeley Castle, Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England.  Maud de's father was Maurice "Make Peace" FitzHarding , Lord Berkeley and her mother was Alice de Berkeley.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert "The Devout" FitzHarding , Lord Berkeley and Eva FitzEstmond; her maternal grandfather was Roger III de Berkeley , of Dursley, Sir. She had two brothers named Robert "The Rebellious" de and Thomas I "The Observer" de.  She was the oldest of the three children.

‌Maud de and Elias III were married in a religious ceremony about 1177.  They had three sons named Walter, Elias IV and Osbert (Osbern) II.
