Allan was born in 1158 in Headington, Oxfordshire, England. Allan's father was Thomas Basset and his mother was Adeliza De Dunstanville. His paternal grandparents were Gilbert Basset and Edith D'Oilly; his maternal grandparents were Alan De Dunstanville and Emma De Langetot. He had four brothers and a sister, named Gilbert, Thomas, Thomas, Thurstan and Isabel. He was the second youngest of the six children. He died at the age of 59 in 1217.
