Gladys Elvina was born on February 22nd, 1921. Gladys Elvina's father was Martin J. Thoe and her mother was Helen Pearl Guthu. Her maternal grandparents were Simon Peder Guthu and Hellen Bennett. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Lester M., Marshall Palmer, Milo James, Lawrence, Jeanette Elizabeth and Dorothy P. She was the third youngest of the seven children.
