Lawrence was born in 1827 in Jackson Co,Virginia. Lawrence's father was Joseph Stephen Hicks and his mother was Margaret Boggs. His paternal grandparents were William Hix and Hannah Garrad\Jarrett; his maternal grandparents were John Boggs and Susanna Drennen. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, William, George Washington, Stephenson B (?), James, Samuel, Nancy Joanna, Elizabeth Jane and Margaret. He was the fourth youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 74 on May 18th, 1901 in Calhoun Co,WV.-
