Stephen Nichols was born in 1875 in Sullivan County, Tennessee.  Stephen Nichols' father was William Wagner Worsham and his mother was Sarah F. Rodgers.  His paternal grandparents were Worsham and Rebecca Millard. He had six brothers and eight sisters, named Daniel S., Reuben S., William E., Thomas Ezekiel, Jefferson W., Robert Pemberton, Martha Ann Eliza, Mary Caldonia, Nancy Catherine, Rosa Lee, Elen Adeline, Sarah Jane, Elizabeth Rebecca and Eva Ernes.  He was the fifth youngest of the fifteen children.
