Lavina was born in 1877 in , Wayne, Illinois. Lavina's father was Alonzo Withrow and her mother was Mary Or Polly Pennington. Her paternal grandparents were Richardson Withrow and Elizabeth King; her maternal grandparents were Uriah Pennington and Frances Mary Plumlee. She had seven brothers and three sisters, named Sylvester, Barnabus Or Barrow D.C., Samuel S., Alonzo Emery, Robert R., Jesse, Anthony J., Elizabeth, Mary Jane and Elmer R.. She was the third youngest of the eleven children. She died at the age of 91 in 1968 in , Wayne, Illinois.-
