Robert was born about 1706 in Isle Of Wight County, Virginia.  Robert's father was William Whitehead and his mother was Rachel Lewis McKinnie. He had seven brothers and a sister, named William, Jacob, Joseph, Lazarus, Arthur, Abraham, Tobias and Mary.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
