Martha was born in 1760 in , Halifax, NC. Martha's father was John Whitaker and her mother was Olive Taylor. Her paternal grandparents were John Whitaker and Martha Gough. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Edward, Hudson, Samuel, Thomas, Margaret Or Peggy and Olive Chambers.
