His paternal grandparents were John Whitaker and Martha Gough; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Cary and Elizabeth Hinde. He had two brothers and four sisters, named John, Richard, Anne, Elizabeth, Temperance and Martha. He was the youngest of the seven children. He died in Halifax County, NC.-
