His paternal grandparents were John Tipsword and Frances Or Farmusy Carlyle; his maternal grandfather was Michael Banning. He had five brothers and four sisters, named James Meredith, Isaac Vincent, Christopher C., Joseph C., Walter, Mary Hester Josie, Juresin, Sarah Ann and Minda. He was the oldest of the ten children.-
