Thomas' father was John Stanhop and his mother was Mary Hawley. His paternal grandparents were Edward Stanhop and Margaret Colshill; his maternal grandfather was John Hawley. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Edward, Henry, John, Michael, Anne, Elizabeth, Margaret, Mary, Susan and Ursula.
