Nancy was born in 1844 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Nancy's father was Gillam Spires Or Spears and her mother was Elizabeth Everhart. Her maternal grandparents were Christian Everhart and Elizabeth. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Sarah and Ida. She was the third youngest of the seven children.
