William was born about 1677 in Nansemond County, Virginia.  William's father was John Spears Doctor and his mother was Joan Mendenhall.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mendenhall and Joan Stroud. He had three brothers named Thomas, John and James.  He died before May 18th, 1735 in Edgecombe Co., NC.
