Mary was born in 1843 in , Of Bourbon, Kentucky. Mary's father was Abram Spears and her mother was Rebecca Ford. She had four brothers and a sister, named Jacob K., William F., Henry, Edward F. and Rebecca. She was the second youngest of the six children.
