John was born about 1730 in Of Edgecombe County, North Carolina.  John's father was John Spiers Captain and his mother was Elizabeth Warren.  His paternal grandparents were John Spears Doctor and Joan Mendenhall. He had a brother and a sister, named William and Apsele. He had two half-sisters named Patience Cotton and Clare.  He died in 1783 in Halifax County, North Carolina.
