Alexander was born in 1820 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Alexander's father was Alexander Skelton and his mother was Susannah Dollins. His paternal grandparents were John Skelton and Elizabeth Roberts. He had two brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Lewis and Margaret. He was the oldest of the four children.-
