May E. was born in 1890. May E.'s father was Ambrose B. Shipley and her mother was Sarah Florence Craft. Her paternal grandparents were Benjamin Jackson Shipley and Barbara Ann Buttes. She had five brothers and a sister, named Benjamin Jackson, Eugene Robert, John, William Grover, James H. and Hattie M.. She was the third youngest of the seven children.
