Gladys was born in 1903 in Tennessee. Gladys' father was George Vernon Shipley and her mother was Ida Lee Dickson. Her paternal grandparents were George Washington Shipley and Margaret Clonniger Fitzgerald. She had a brother named Vernon. She was the older of the two children.
