Adam B. was born in 1848. Adam B.'s father was Benjamin Jackson Shipley and his mother was Barbara Ann Buttes. His paternal grandparents were Adam Shipley and Ellen Holt. He had two brothers and three sisters, named James P., Ambrose B., Elizabeth B., Sarah C. and Margaret A.. He was the third oldest of the six children.
