Her paternal grandparents were William Rutledge and Eleanor Caldwell; her maternal grandparents were William Armstrong and Mary Caldwell. She had two brothers and eight sisters, named William, George Washington, Mary Or Polly, Priscilla, Eleanor Or Nelly, Sarah Or Sally, Elizabeth, Jane Or Jenny, Nancy and Louisa Armstrong. She was the third youngest of the eleven children.-
