Manila was born in 1836 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Manila's father was David S. Rogers and her mother was Mary Mitchell. Her paternal grandparents were George Rogers and Matilda Brown; her maternal grandparents were Solomon Mitchell and Nancy Broughton. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Herbert S., Madison, Mary, Jane and Martha. She was the third oldest of the six children.-
