Matilda was born in 1874 in , Bourbon, Kentucky. Matilda's father was William Rion and her mother was Martha A. Moore. Her paternal grandparents were Stokeley Towles Rion and Martha Ann Rucker; her maternal grandparents were James S. Moore and Martha A. Bibb. She had a brother and three sisters, named Willie, Nettie, Jessie and Rion. She was the second oldest of the five children.-
