Cornelia was born in 1871 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Cornelia's father was George Richards and her mother was Mary Ann Farmer. Her maternal grandparents were George Farmer and Elizabeth Or Lizzie. She had a brother and four sisters, named James, Julia Melissa, Elizabeth, Delpha A. and Nancy J.. She was the second oldest of the six children.
