Anderson was born in 1858 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Anderson's father was John Poe and his mother was Mary. His paternal grandparents were Henry Poe and Amanda C.. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Henderson, Jackson, Charles, Catherine and Martha. He was the oldest of the six children.
