John H. was born on January 29th, 1820 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. John H.'s father was Lawrence Pearson and his mother was Elizabeth Devault. His paternal grandparents were Christian Pearson and Catherine; his maternal grandparents were Abraham Devault and Katherine Gross. He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, Pryor Lee, Lewis, Eliza Jane, Catherine, Adeline and Emeline. He was the oldest of the eight children.-
