Ellen was born in 1845 in , Bourbon, Kentucky. Ellen's father was William M. Mitchell and her mother was Margaret Or Mary. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Henry, Joseph, George, Mary Jane Or Mollie and Sarah. She was the oldest of the six children.
