Anderson was born about 1823 in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Anderson's father was Timothy Millard and his mother was Elizabeth Christie. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Millard and Rebecca Henton; his maternal grandfather was Hugh Christie. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named Hugh, Samuel, Thomas, George, Timothy, Abiah, Levi, Christy, Rebecca, Elizabeth and Sarah. He was the youngest of the twelve children.-
