John C. was born on February 6th, 1838 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. John C.'s father was Thomas Alexander Long and his mother was Nancy Christian. His paternal grandparents were John Long and Sarah Ball; his maternal grandparents were John Christian and Nancy Skelton. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, George, Allen Christian, James, William, Andrew, Sarah Louisa, Jane and Nancy Ann. He was the second oldest of the eleven children.-
