Hester was born in 1797 in , , Virginia. Hester's father was Robert Kyle and her mother was Sarah Reynolds. Her paternal grandparents were William Kyle and Sarah Stephens; her maternal grandfather was John Reynolds. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Robert, Thomas Jefferson, Joseph, James Madison, Mary, Nancy, Diana and Melinda. She was the third oldest of the ten children.-
