Pheriby was born in 1763 in Of, Halifax, NC. Pheriby's father was Moses Knight and her mother was Charity Carter. Her paternal grandparents were John Knight and Isabel; her maternal grandparents were Kindred Carter and Mary. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Kindred, James Allen, John Carter, Mary and Sarah.
