Mary R. was born in 1859 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Mary R.'s father was Williams Kinkead and her mother was Louisiana. Her paternal grandparents were Williams Kinkead and Nancy Gibbons. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Charles, Ellis, Nancy E., Florida Jane, Matilda and Melissa. She was the oldest of the seven children.
