John I. was born in 1820 in , Bourbon, Kentucky. John I.'s father was Thomas Jones and his mother was Martha Or Patsy Ashurst. His paternal grandparents were James Jones and Sarah Schooler; his maternal grandparents were Josiah Ashurst and Rebecca Kennedy. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Josiah Ashurst, Thomas D., Rebecca Kennedy, Sarah D. and Perlina A.. He was the second oldest of the six children.-
