Jacob was born about 1815 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Jacob's father was Jacob Howe and his mother was Elizabeth Groves. His maternal grandparents were John Grove and Anne. He had two brothers and six sisters, named John, Henry, Elizabeth, Catherine, Margaret, Nancy, Christian Ann and Mary. He was the youngest of the nine children. He had a half-sister named Katherine.-
