Jacob was born on November 6th, 1749 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Jacob's father was John Hottel and his mother was Margaret. His paternal grandparents were George Hottel and Elizabeth. He had four brothers and six sisters, named John, Daniel, Joseph, Solomon, Anna, Barbara, Elizabeth, Magdalene, Mary and Susannah.
