John was born in 1802 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. John's father was Christopher Haynes and his mother was Frances Turner. His paternal grandparents were Francis Bythell Haynes and Anne Bell; his maternal grandparents were Jesse Turner and Phereba Hobgood. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Christopher, Jesse Turner, Francis, Ferubba Or Phereba, Lucy, Sarah, Jane and Mary. He had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thomas, Turner, Henry, Drury Alsobrook, Jesse and Nancy. He died in Of Carroll Co., LA.-
