Cornelia was born in 1841 in Of, Hawkins, Tennessee.  Cornelia's father was Robert Gibbons and her mother was Jane.  Her paternal grandfather was John Gibbons. She had a brother and two sisters, named Robert, Elizabeth and Rowena.  She was the oldest of the four children.
