Gano and Elizabeth Ewing; his maternal grandfather was William Conn. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William Conn, Richard M., Stephen F., Franklin M., John Allen, Fannie C., Eliza G. and Mary Eliza. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
