Martha Ellen was born in 1835 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Martha Ellen's father was Isaac B. Ford and her mother was Elizabeth Gross. Her maternal grandparents were William Gross and Nancy. She had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Samuel Houston, Mary A. and Sarah Matilda. She was the third oldest of the five children.
