Lanchford was born in 1845 in Of, Hawkins, Tennessee. Lanchford's father was Obadiah Fields and his mother was Vina. His paternal grandparents were Obadiah Fields and Avis Smith. He had a brother and a sister, named William and Sarah. He was the oldest of the three children.
