Vera was born in 1838 in Of, Hawkins, Tennessee.  Vera's father was Peter Ferris and her mother was Anna.  Her paternal grandfather was Ferris. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Joseph B., Elijah D., Peter, Lydia and Elizabeth.  She was the second youngest of the six children.
