Chary was born in 1848 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Chary's father was Eli Eaton and her mother was Rebecca Rutledge. Her maternal grandparents were Emanuel Rutledge and Sarah Kate Wilson. She had a brother named William. She was the older of the two children.
