Patience was born in 1779 in Franklin County, VA. Patience's father was Mitchell Clay and her mother was Phoebe Belcher. Her paternal grandparents were William Mitchell Clay and Tabitha Pierce; her maternal grandparents were Richard Belcher and Phoebe Obed Clay. She had seven brothers and seven sisters, named David, Ezekiel, Henry J., Mitchell, William, Bartley, Charles, Mary, Nannie, Obedience, Polly, Rebecca, Sarah and Tabitha.-
