Catherine was born in 1828 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Catherine's father was Samuel Chestnut and her mother was Susan Lee.  Her paternal grandfather was Chestnut; her maternal grandparents were Thomas Lee and Mary Or Polly. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas H., Rodham, Patrick, Samuel, Caroline, Martha, Sarah, Margaret, Margaret, Chestnut and Susan.  She was the oldest of the twelve children.
