Oliver was born on July 28th, 1850 in Polk Co., TN. Oliver's father was James Madison Charles and his mother was Eliza Dodson. His paternal grandparents were Oliver Charles and Jane Bridwell; his maternal grandparents were Elisha Dodson and Mary. He had two brothers named John E. and James B.. He was the oldest of the three children. He had four half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Joseph E., William Boyd, James Frank, Thomas Nixon, Margaret Jane, Lea Ann, Emma Jo, Minnie L. and Caroline.-
