David was born on July 20th, 1795 in , , South Carolina.  David's father was Thomas Cantrell and his mother was Elizabeth Norris.  His maternal grandfather was Thomas Norris. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Isaac, Jacob, Thomas, Elijah, Gabriel, Nancy, Mary, Sarah and Brazalian.  He was the third youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 63 on February 19th, 1859 in , Mcminn, Tennessee.
