Mary K. was born in 1853. Mary K.'s father was Henry Burem and her mother was Nancy Cox Singleton. Her paternal grandparents were Henry Burem and Mary Miller. She had two brothers, and also a sibling of unknown gender named John, Henry and Otey. She was the second oldest of the four children. She had three half-brothers named Absalom Joshua, Paschal King and Peter Grove.-
