Lotta was born in 1834 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Lotta's father was Martin Beal and her mother was Nancy. Her paternal grandparents were John Beal and Eve Or Elizabeth Eberhardt. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Martin, Nicholas, Lucinda, Mary, Eveline and Katherine. She was the second oldest of the seven children.-
