Patience was born in 1838 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Patience's father was Jonathan Barnard and her mother was Mary Or Polly Ball. Her paternal grandparents were John B. Barnard and Sarah Bachman; her maternal grandparents were Wesley Ball and Sarah Jane Bailey. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Wesley, George, Spencer, John, Nancy, Eliza, Sarah Jane and Martha E.. She was the second oldest of the nine children.-
